BLACK LOTUS YOGA | A Weekend Deep Dive Introduction into the First Series by Rowena Johnson
BLACK LOTUS YOGA | A Weekend Deep Dive Introduction into the First Series
Black Lotus Yoga is the latest blossom of the modern vinyasa tradition, developed by Ty Landrum and rooted in the principles of Hatha Yoga and Ty’s Ashtanga Yoga lineage. Working with the natural movements of the breath, the practice vitalises the body, opens the heart, and invites creativity and curiosity to flow.
This practice is less about extreme discipline or forcing the body into a mould and more about creating space within the body for the spirit to rise and spread its lotus petals upward towards the light.
For those who practise Jivamukti or Ashtanga Yoga, Black Lotus offers a harmonious and enchanting extension. Practitioners with experience in other forms of Vinyasa Yoga will discover a nuanced and adaptable approach that can enrich their existing practice.
Whether you are curious and experimental, devoted to your practice, or looking for a way back into it, Black Lotus can breathe new life into your understanding of what it means to practise yoga.
A WEEKEND DEEP DIVE INTRODUCTION
TO THE BLACK LOTUS YOGA SYSTEM
This weekend offers an introduction to the Black Lotus Yoga system and its First Series. You will learn how the system works, how to practise and adapt the sequence, and how its principles can be integrated into other forms of yoga that you already practise.
Both mornings begin with a guided Black Lotus Yoga practice before shifting into workshop mode, where we will explore the patterns of breath and movement that bring the postures alive.
By the end of the weekend, you will understand the energetic architecture of the First Series, know how to work with its different shades, and have a sequence that you can continue exploring independently.
No previous experience of Black Lotus Yoga is required. The weekend is especially suited to practitioners with some experience of dynamic yoga who are curious to discover a new breath-led approach.
DAY 1 - SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 12
08:00 – 10:00 First Series Guided Black Lotus Practice
Rowena will guide you through the first series. You can expect an energising standing sequence which paves the way towards the dynamic yet soothing heart of the first series.
10:00 – 11:00 What is Black Lotus?
In this session you will learn about the ethos that underpins this system. There will be a discussion on the five prana vayus and more specifically how to locate and enhance our awareness of prana, apana and udana vayu, to bring depth and potency to our practice. Engagement with these movements quickens the flow of the vital force throughout the body, and supports the process of deep emotional release. Through these explorations, you’ll learn how to naturally engage with bandha and mudra, and will renew your understanding of what somatic yoga is all about.
11:30-13:30 Opening & Standing Sequence
Here we will embody the philosophy, as we explore the interplay of prana and apana as it manifest in a wavelike movement throughout the sun salutations and standing asanas. This intrinsic pattern draws from the root of the pelvis and reaches out through the heart and the crown of the head. And when we attend to that movement, the spine begins to undulate rather naturally. With an understanding of how this looks we’ll learn how to integrate it into our vinyasa practice.
DAY 2- SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13
08:00 – 10:00 First Series Guided Black Lotus Practice
Rowena will again guide you through the first series, allowing for the integration of the insights from the previous days.
10:00 – 11:00 The Heart of the First Series | Part 1
In part 1 we will explore, asana by asana, the apanic current which leads the way in the first segment of the first series and how the prana current is represented to balance the dominance of apana.
11:30 - 13:00 The Heart of the First Series & Closing | Part 2
In part 2 we will explore the pranic current which leads the way in the second segment of the first series and how the roots of the apanic current allow for prana to expand. We will then see how the practice is closed.
13:00-13:30 Pranayama
We’ll end the workshop with a gentle guided pranayama practice, distilling our efforts into the sweet and potent nectar within.

Rowena Johnson
Rowena has been practising yoga asana since 2008. What began as a physical pursuit soon developed into a deeper awareness of body, mind, and spirit. Curious about the history and physiology of the practice, she continued to explore through workshops and retreats before completing her first 200-hour teacher training in India in 2016.
Since then, Rowena has taught in the United Kingdom, Central America, and South America and has served as a main teacher on a 200-hour teacher training in India.
Rowena believes deeply in the importance of remaining a student first and foremost. This commitment has led her to study Ashtanga Yoga under the guidance of Sharath Jois at KPJAYI in Mysore and Jivamukti Yoga with David Life, Anja Kühnel, and Rima Rani Rabbath in Costa Rica.
Her continuing exploration of breath-led vinyasa yoga has also brought Black Lotus Yoga into her practice and teaching, where its combination of energetic precision, adaptability, and creative movement finds a natural home.
Rowena is grateful to all the special teachers who have influenced her path, including Netta Imber, Corrie Ananda Preece, Cat Alip-Douglas, and Harmony Slater and Ty Landrum

What is Black Lotus Yoga?
Black Lotus Yoga is the latest blossom of the modern vinyasa tradition, developed by Ty Landrum and rooted in the principles of Hatha Yoga and Ty’s Ashtanga Yoga lineage. Working with the natural movements of the breath, the practice vitalises the body, opens the heart, and invites creativity and curiosity to flow.
The complete Black Lotus Yoga system comprises a Foundations sequence and six progressively arranged series. Each series can be practised in three different shades—white, grey, and black—offering variations that can be woven together according to your individual needs, energy, and edge on any given day.
The white shade offers the most accessible expression, grey introduces greater challenge, and black amplifies the form. They are not fixed stages or achievements, but different possibilities within the practice. A single sequence may move between all three shades, creating structure without rigidity and leaving space for individual exploration and discovery.
While each series has its own character, they all follow a shared energetic arc: moving from deep grounding towards more expansive physical expressions and raising the vital force through the centre of the body. The practice explores the internal forms of breath, bandha, mudra, and intelligent structural alignment to awaken and direct subtle energy.
